Our Church History
As a mission of St. Theresa Church in neighboring Belleview, the prayers and hopes of many for a church facility of their own approached reality when land was purchased along Route 464, in Candler with a vision communities of Silver Spring Shores, Candler, Ocklawaha, and Lake Weir.
On June 15, 1983, Bishop Thomas J. Grady, Diocese of Orlando, commissioned Fr. Sean Shine pastor of the new parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary. Orginially, Sunday Mass was celebrated in the Silver Springs Shores Community Center, and daily Mass in the rectory.
The first building on the site was dedicated by Bishop Grady on January 12, 1986. It was a large edifice which served as a social hall as well as a church. Masses were held on Saturday and Sunday morning.
The second building, the Marion Center was dedicated February 23, 1992, by Bishop Norbert Dorsey, who had become bishop in 1990. The building contains an office, seven classrooms, kitchen and youth group meeting room.
As the number of parishioners increased, the need for a larger church became apparent, and a new church was built and dedicated by Bishop Dorsey on March 25, 1996.
Our Grotto of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was constructed by Fr. Shine and his talented crew of volunteers in 1998.
Father Sean Shine retired in June, 2000, and Father Stephen Phillips was assigned our pastor on August 1, 2000. He held that position until September 30, 2005, when Father Felicito Baybay was placed here as Pastoral Administrator.
